Biochar to improve the soil: Testing a new green business concept in Zambia

Good for the planet, for farmers and the local economy - this project has it all. In an ongoing collaboration with Conservation Farming Unit in Zambia, a consortium of natural and social scientists are testing the science and business prospect for applying biochar to increase farming yields and produce carbon credits. I presented the project at the Valuing Nature Conference at The Royal Society in London in October 2019. A recently approved crediting methodology makes me hopeful about the prospects of developing a carbon offset project - it would represent a welcome source of additional income for the farmers.
