It’s a Question of Trust

Transparency as a first step to clarity, trust, and durable flows of finance

Carbon markets have the potential to channel much needed finance into climate solutions. So far, so uncontroversial. But potential does not imply impact - let alone positive impact. I have learned from my 11 years (and counting) of experience in the sustainable bond market that sustainable investors find it difficult to navigate the landscape and welcome third-party ratings or assessments of the quality of the product they are buying.

The voluntary carbon market has experienced a tumultuous couple of years but is showing signs of recovery. Given the range of standards and demands that these credits seek to satisfy, there is presently a need for independent ratings to assist the offset purchasers. Ratings agencies such as BeZero Carbon can improve transparency and increase confidence that capital is directed into climate projects which deliver on the ground. This is why I am delighted to have been invited to join the advisory board of BeZero Carbon. I look forward to providing independent guidance and advice as the company grows over the coming years.
